International Day for the Persons with Disabilities 2012
The key note address was delivered by Mr.E.P.M.V.Weerakkody, former Professor, Department of Classical Languages, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya.
Principals of 25 Government assisted Special School all over the Island were awarded a certificates and a plaques by the chief guest for the effort by them rendered in the development of children with disabilities based on an assessment conducted jointly by the Ministry of Social Services and Ministry of Education. Children in Special Schools and Vocational Training Centres who won in the essay and art competition were also awarded prizes and certificates.
Several cultural events were performed by the trainees of Seeduwa and Wattegama Vocational Training Centres. Members of Parliament Mrs. Kamala Ranatunga and Mr. Buddhika Pathirana, members of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, representatives from the organizations for the disabled, general public and some school children were also among the participants.
Mrs. Emelda Sukumar, Secretary, Ministry of Social Services, Mr.M.C.L.Fernando, Addl. Secretary, Ministry of Social Services, Mr. M.D.C.Jayamanne, Director, National Secretariat for Persons with Disabilities, Mr. Hemachandra Hewage, Director Social Services and many distinguish guest are present at the ceremony.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is held on 3rd December 2012 from 9.00a.m. at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute under the patronage of Minister of Social Services Hon. Felix Perera, and with the participation of Deputy Minister of Social Services Hon. Chandrasiri Sooriyaarachchi including distinguished guests.
